The Creative Commons can be somewhat compared to any office’s community refrigerator. Each morning commuter swings by and drops off their day’s lunch break in a bag. That fridge is packed full of all kinds of ordinary and exotic nourriture. And yes, while it is true that you wouldn’t go near many of those tupperware containers without a gas mask, there are always a few leftover beef bourguignons or quiches lorraines amid a sea of tuna fish sandwiches. The only foreseeable downfall to such a refrigerator is that you can never be sure that your afternoon sustenance will be waiting for you when you return. That creepy guy in the cubicle next to yours named Don could drop off a jar of olives and suddenly, those olives would be up for the taking— by anyone. But, Don has an ace up his sleeve. He could rip off a piece of masking tape, grab a black permanent marker, and label that jar with his namesake in that shaky hand of his.

Don is on to something. He has protected his green olives so that they can sit in his empty martini glass at the end of tonight. But Jean, who has just made her way through the parking lot carrying an entire homemade chocolate mousse cake, is starting a revolution.  Neatly scrawled on the top of the plastic container are two words. “Help yourself.” And thus,  the comparison of the Creative Commons and Copyright laws has been explained— albeit, obtusely.
